English Grammar/Syntax/Structure of the Sentence in English

Hello friends, my name is Bhushan Ingle..and I am an English Language teacher. Many Indian people have the bugbear about English language. They assume that English language is too difficult to learn. But Friends, I have to tell you that English is very easy language compare with our native languages. English language has very simple Grammar rules. Only one thing is that English language has a very long vocabulary as well phonetics, and most important is pronunciation which is different from the spelling. But if you study it with consistency, you will definitely overcome all the obstacles easily if you are guided step by step properly. Syntax is a fundamental aspect of English grammar that governs the arrangement and structure of words, phrases, and sentences in a coherent and meaningful way.

                     Friends, I share my experience with you. I did not apply any coaching classes in my life. Because I had no money for that. But with a lot of tenacity and perseverance, I overcame it very confidently. I toiled a lot to learn English with self study. Whatever knowledge I acquired, I will share it with you in this article.. so Let's commence......

Before we come to the noun topic...we must have some basic knowledge of syntax in English.

Structure of the sentence (syntax) in English

Rule: S+MV+O+C

Where,

   S :- Subject

MV:- Main Verb

   O:- Object

   C :- complement

Definition of Subject:- The word which usually commences the sentence and fulfills the action in the sentence, is called subject.

Example: He plays cricket on the ground.

       in this sentence, "he" is the word which completes the work in the sentence. That's why "He" is a subject here.

Definition of main verb:- The word which is used to indicate the main action in the sentence, called main verb.

Example:  He plays cricket on the ground.

         in this sentence, The word "plays" indicates the main action in the sentence. So it is main verb.( There are many types of Verb which we will study in next articles)

Definition of Object:- The word in the sentence on which the Subject completes the action, is called as Object.

Example:- He plays cricket on the ground.

      the subject "he" completes the action of play on cricket. Therefore, cricket is object here..

There are two different types of Object.
1) Direct Object
2) Indirect Object
First of all, we will see the definition....

Definition of Direct Object:-If you ask the question to main verb using the word "what", ...the answer which we will get, is called Direct Object.
We take a sentence for better understanding..
Ex. He eats almonds in home.
Let's ask the question using "what" to the main verb of this sentence..
Question: what does he eat in home?
By asking this question, you will get the answer which is "almonds". That means in this sentence,  "almonds " is Direct Object.
This rule applies on every sentence. If there is no answer, that means, there is no Direct Object in that sentence. For example,

He eats in home.
If we ask  the question to this sentence using "what", there will be no answer found in this sentence. Let's see,
What does he eat?
We can not get answer from given sentence. So, there is not any Direct Object in this sentence.
Ask the questions to below sentences. And decide whether there is any Direct Object or not.
Sentences:
1) I make a table.
2) she sings a song.
3) They dig in the farm.
4) we celebrate his birthday.
5) you steal my wallet.

Definition of Indirect Object:- If you ask the question to the main verb in the sentence, using" whom", the answer you will get, is the Indirect Object of the sentence.

Example:
He follows his father.
in this sentence, if you ask the question using "whom",
The question will be...
Whom does he follows?
Then you will acquire the answer
"To his father",
That indicates "his father" is Indirect Object in this sentence.

Some sentences have both Direct Object and indirect object. For example

She gives a chocolate to me.

  We can get the answer of both questions.

Question:What does she give to me?
Answer  :A chocolate. (Direct Object)

Question: whom does she give a chocolate?
Answer   : To me. (Indirect Object).

               We have finished the structure of the sentence. Now we will see what the complement is.

Complements:- the words in the sentence which helps to make the sentence more meaningful except subject,verb and object are called complements.
Example: He plays cricket on the ground. 


# The words which usually comes after preposition (including preposition) are always complements.

In conclusion, syntax is a powerful component of English grammar that reigns the structure and arrangement of words, phrases, and sentences. Understanding syntax allows us to construct grammatically correct and meaningful sentences, easing effective communication. By adhering to syntactic rules, we ensure explicity of organization, and comprehension in our written and spoken language.
